In the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, in the world’s greatest grassroots bluegrass music venue, is a place where all kids can come and explore music with other kids (and some adult kids): The Southland Jamboree Kids Music Camp at Meadowgreen. Meadowgreen Appalachian Music Park and Campground, near Clay City, Kentucky, has for countless years hosted concerts and festivals featuring the world’s best bluegrass music and bands. Out of the heritage of the Festival of the Bluegrass Kids music camp and Bob and Jean Cornett’s vision to continue passing on the joy of bluegrass music to the next generation of pickers, comes our dream: a new kids music camp at Meadowgreen, led by the volunteers of the Southland Jamboree.
Children participating in the camp receive 6 hours of instruction in various musical instruments, including fiddle, guitar, banjo, mandolin, and bass. Each student is responsible for bringing their own instrument. They are treated to 3 two-hour instrument lessons, an hour of vocal instruction, a T-shirt making arts and crafts session, a Friday evening dinner, and a Sunday afternoon concert showcasing the children’s new accomplishments. A second showcase experience will follow at a Southland Jamboree concert performance later in the season at 6:00 pm.
The instructors leading these sessions are experienced musicians who generously volunteer their time and energy to ensure that this event continues to positively impact the lives of young people in our community. Host Bands contribution free performances as well as music instruction and many jamming opportunites to play with others!
This music camp is for kids, ages 6 to 18. Participation may be limited. There is no cost for the kids camp, and all kids must be accompanied by a camping parent or guardian on site at all times. Meadowgreen generously donated their facilities and stages for our camp. Parents of campers are responsible for primitive camping fees of $15/night, RV sites fees of $45/night. (Camping fees subject to change for 2025).
New this year: Activities/Workshops for parents, including how to best support your youth in music, crafts for adults, etc.
